VIDEO TRANSFER FAQ

How much does video transfer cost?

Most consumer video cassettes are $20 dollars per tape. This includes the transfer of the tape itself, the post processing, and minor editing. If you would like for the digital files to be put on a hard drive, there is an extra cost.

For pro video formats and film, Time Travel, LLC prices each separately depending upon the tape format.

For every order, a member of our team creates an estimate at no charge, showing you the full breakdown of costs so it will be clear what the work will cost before transfer services take place. Give us a call today!

What is de-interlacing?

Great question! Your old videotapes looked the best on your old clunky cathode ray tube television. Those giant glass behemoths of yesteryear used a beam of electrons to paint images on a fluorescent coated surface. To work, they displayed every other line every 60th of a second. Two of these interlaced scans were required to make a full screen image. The recording systems of the day, VHS, 8mm, etc. all recorded in this interlaced format.

Modern screens function in a completely different fashion, so viewing these old interlaced recordings looks really awful on modern day TVs, monitors, and phones.

Our specialized post processing professionally stabilizes the image by converting the video from an interlaced to a progressive format. And the results are amazing!

How long will it take?

It depends on the number of tapes you have and how many other clients we are currently working with! Tapes transfer happens in real time, so if Grandpa recorded a home VHS in extended play mode and the length was over 6 hours, then it will take us over 6 hours to transfer it.

Every tape is transferred in real time. So 60 hours of recorded content will take us 60 hours to capture!

We also need a bit of time to perform de-interlacing, luckily that can happen faster than real time, so that 60 hours of media only takes us a few hours to process!

Fortunately, we have multiple video machines in each format. Depending on our workload, Time Travel, LLC can handle multiple tapes a day, but larger orders may take a few weeks. When the estimate is provided, a member of our team will give you a time frame before you agree to any services! And YES, we can do rush orders, just let us know in advance!

How will I receive the files?

Time Travel, LLC provides the digital files of your tapes any way that you would like! Delivery is free when we send your files to you via WeTransfer.com or upload them into your cloud storage service directly.

For an additional fee we can provide the files on external USB hard drives. Or if it is only one or two tapes, USB sticks.

We can also create DVDs if you still have a DVD player, but those are still an interlaced, compressed format. (Only some DVD players support progressive video formats.) But YES we can do full menu DVD’s with custom color printed discs if you are interested!

What digital file format will the files be sent to me?

1920x1080p, h264, Quicktime MOV, @ 59.94 FPS. These files can be opened and enjoyed on any device.

What if something happens to my digital files after I got my tapes back?

Time Travel, LLC keeps a copy of your files on our local storage drives for 30 days after transfer in case somehow your digital files get deleted or hard drive or DVDs get lost or destroyed. When life happens, we can send you the files again without you paying another transfer fee. It’s essentially like going back in time!

Can Time Travel, LLC actually travel in time?

These old tapes are a direct window into the past. See yourself as a child, see siblings, family and long-lost pets from the world as it was, twenty, thirty, forty years ago and beyond.

Beyond the photographic and recorded evidence, what is there? Even memories fade over time. These meager magnetic particles clinging to slim pieces of plastic won’t last forever. This may be the last time to see moments from eras that have departed…

We can take you there!
